9 & 1/two hours into the game and I'grand loving it thus far. The cast of characters is and then much more than entertaining and actually charismatic unlike my time with XI. Yangus is a bandit with a center of gold, Jessica is a fiesty magician, and the titular cursed Male monarch is a funnily written character who's struggling to get used to his new form. Subsequently all I was just in a bar room brawl that had me chuckling at how each of my party members handled the situation.

I see why the instant Abracadabra Pot would be dainty but with PCSX'due south 2x speed for overworld AND gainsay in a game that's already grindy, it's fine. Plus this game looks gorgeous still and why I don't desire to bit my progress to switch to a version that's 240p.

As I said in some other threadmark combat is skilful not just because of 2x speed just because I feel like the abilities gained from skill point resource allotment and the tension organisation are great fifty-fifty if not all that deep. Though I gotta give the game the side-eye for Jessica's character specific skill indicate being sex appeal. Mechanically information technology's nice being able to "stun" enemies past making them fall in dear with her but holy shit that made the game seem directly outta the 40s or something.

And while Dhoulmagus has still yet to really establish himself as our villain, the moment to moment story of just following his trail of destruction is at least serviceable. I had similar complaints with Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition where the overall story was lacking though I was enjoying the characters and their recruitment past helping them out of their jams as nosotros traveled the world.

Finally, I think expectations are the biggest reason why I'm enjoying myself. I was expecting something more than out of DQXI given the scores the game received, excitement to finally play one of these after getting into JRPGs, loving DQ Builders (aka being one of the cultivated people SE tried to build up with Builders & Heroes), and just knowing how large the series was in the genre/Japan.

Just at present that I know what the games are, very safe and conservative JRPGs, my expectations are properly set.

I nonetheless can't understand with the worldwide success of DQXI and the growing popularity of the franchise.. why an Hard disk Remastered version of DDVIII isn't planned and announced for all home consoles and PC ?

Did you really buy the game in the end?

Thoughts:

No to iOS for sure

PS2 has the best graphics but missing QOL stuff

3DS has new content and QOL updates it (alchemy pot is instant and no waiting which is HUGE. Enemies are visible now which makes avoiding battles easier. There is fast forward for battles. All the same, the graphics are meh.

So if junior graphics don't bother you, the 3DS version is the definitive one, easily.

Merely if you didn't get into 11 then I don't recommend playing 8. It'due south the closest game in the serial to compare to 11. I loved both merely ymmv

Jessica is supposed to exist the "sexy" grapheme like Jade was in DQXI, which is unfortunate since she's the only playable female graphic symbol in the PS2 version. Her "sex appeal" skills and alternative outfits but get more ridiculous equally you progress throughout the game.

The PS2 version is great. Visually it has aged likewise equally a game from that era can when running on an emulator at 4K. Furthermore, the orchestral soundtrack is great and an integral role of the experience for me.

The handheld version rubs me the wrong mode, the art style is ruined by graphical downgrades and the weird overly saturated wait. The midi music is absolute garbage as well (unless y'all mod the rom). Farther, additional content is nice only I don't think the game needed whatsoever, information technology is fine as is.

I'm a little worried you won't like VIII if you didn't like Eleven.

I don't begrudge yous wanting to play the game to try it out without spending ridiculous prices on eBay. But now you are playing the game and enjoying information technology, you lot could buy the 3DS version of the game. Buying new is an selection through the eshop besides if it's expensive second hand.

Damn you conscience! But yeah I'll shop around for a used PS2 copy presently because I don't feel like scrapping progress, it's cheaper than digital or 2nd manus 3DS physical copies, I like the style this version looks, 3DS is already outdated, and I'm hoping they'll properly remaster since they're gonna remake DQ3. Plus it'll exist absurd to have on the shelf.

Damn you conscience! But yes I'll shop around for a used PS2 re-create soon considering I don't experience like scrapping progress, it's cheaper than digital or second mitt 3DS physical copies, I like the way this version looks, 3DS is already outdated, and I'm hoping they'll properly remaster since they're gonna remake DQ3. Plus information technology'll be absurd to have on the shelf.
Nothing wrong with playing the PS2 version through, particularly for a first playthrough. I didn't recollect I'd always play the 3DS version, just my 3rd or 4th time through I decided I didn't want to deal with random battles again and just wanted to bask the progression of the game, hence why I gave upwardly the slightly amend graphics and honestly it didn't bother me much in the end.

Damn you conscience! Just yeah I'll shop around for a used PS2 re-create soon because I don't experience like scrapping progress, it'southward cheaper than digital or 2nd mitt 3DS concrete copies, I similar the way this version looks, 3DS is already outdated, and I'one thousand hoping they'll properly remaster since they're gonna remake DQ3. Plus information technology'll be cool to have on the shelf.
I estimate I was only thinking buy the 3DS version cheap if y'all can, and then keep playing the PS2 version emulated...

I'm gonna wait for a Switch remaster before I play it. I'm very excited fifty-fifty though it's not been announced, and your initial reaction is very encouraging.

It looks like you already made your selection, simply for what it's worth, the power to avoid random encounters in the 3ds version makes it mode better than the ps2 version regardless of the visuals and audio. It'south still a great game on the ps2, but the endless random battles really kill the sense of hazard around one-half way through.

There really isn't a definitive version of VIII.

It'southward better graphics + orchestrated tracks + shorter loading times vs additional characters + visible enemies + full VA. Too big screen vs protability.

I was hoping they would announce a Switch port in the anniversary event, but oh, well.

I tried the 3DS 1, only the frame rate, pop-in and graphics kept me from getting into information technology. DQ7 was adjusted pretty well, but 8 was as well crude for me.

In hindsight I wish they had announced a remaster at the issue likewise. I'm surprised though at just how much VA is in the original, don't heed some silent text parts given the "critical path" moments are voiced. Plus random battles are surprisingly well paced and not obnoxious with how often they occur, even with 2x speed on.

ix & 1/two hours into the game and I'm loving it thus far. The cast of characters is and then much more entertaining and really charismatic dissimilar my time with 11. Yangus is a bandit with a centre of gilt, Jessica is a fiesty wizard, and the titular cursed Male monarch is a funnily written grapheme who'due south struggling to get used to his new form. After all I was merely in a bar room brawl that had me chuckling at how each of my party members handled the situation.

Congratulations, you lot just got yourself into Dragon Quest. This giddy temper couple with groovy vignettes and great gameplay is what makes the series so special.

Eight is a much better game than XI. I enjoyed XI, simply I can't quite put my finger on why, it felt a bit banal, kind of similar they're were trying to brand a "past the book" DQ since it was meant to be a homage to the original trilogy or sorts. So they put a lot of very DQish elements in information technology, but I felt that the game kinda lacked a strong identity of its own.

Information technology's even so a neat game and in that location's magic to exist constitute in it for sure, just it's more subtle instead of arable like in 8. I'm sure yous will savour it a lot more if y'all go back to information technology in the future, later on being initiated in the series.

Afterward Viii, my recommendation is IV or V, and the III remake when it hits the Switch. This is a wonderful series, you're in for a treat.

You will non like dragon quest viii if y'all did non like dragon quest xi.

But if you lot yet feel like playing information technology go for the ps2 version or fifty-fifty meliorate yet the ps2 version running on a emulator.

As I said in some other threadmark gainsay is good non merely considering of 2x speed only because I feel similar the abilities gained from skill indicate allocation and the tension system are nifty even if not all that deep. Though I gotta requite the game the side-heart for Jessica'due south graphic symbol specific skill point beingness sex appeal. Mechanically information technology's dainty being able to "stun" enemies by making them autumn in love with her but holy shit that fabricated the game seem straight outta the 40s or something.

not sure if this is relevant to you or non but this archetype and these types of abilities aren't specific to female characters in the DQ universe (though to be fair they're probably more commonly on female characters). Some monsters have them and in DQ11 sylvando is a male character who has access to whips / all the "seductress" type powers.

It'due south all empty-headed fun in DQ and in my opinion completely harmless. What defines a female character (or any character) isn't whether they are "sexual activity positive" but whether they are a fully written and fleshed out character
